How to make App Store screenshots for iPhone Duo

To make iPhone Duo screenshots, run your app in the iPhone Duo simulator from Xcode 27.1, capture the outer display while the phone is folded and the inner display while it is unfolded, and upload the PNGs to the iPhone Duo slot in App Store Connect.

All sizes in one place: iPhone Duo screenshot sizes.

Do it yourself

1. Install Xcode 27.1 and the iOS 27.1 runtime

The iPhone Duo simulator needs the iOS 27.1 runtime, which is a separate download in Xcode settings. Xcode 27.1 also adds Device Hub, where you can see your app on iPhone Duo in every pose and orientation.

2. Build your app for the simulator

xcodebuild -scheme YourApp -configuration Release \
  -destination 'generic/platform=iOS Simulator' \
  -derivedDataPath build

Details: How to make a simulator build.

3. Create and boot an iPhone Duo simulator

UDID=$(xcrun simctl create "Duo shots" "iPhone Duo")
xcrun simctl boot "$UDID"
xcrun simctl install "$UDID" build/Build/Products/Release-iphonesimulator/YourApp.app

4. Clean up the status bar

xcrun simctl status_bar "$UDID" override --time 9:41 \
--batteryState charged --batteryLevel 100 --wifiBars 3 --cellularBars 4

5. Capture the outer display folded

There is no simctl command for the hinge. The open-source hinge tool sets the angle from the command line:

brew install artemnovichkov/tap/hinge
hinge -d "$UDID" close
xcrun simctl launch "$UDID" com.example.yourapp
xcrun simctl io "$UDID" screenshot --display=1 outer-1.png

6. Unfold and capture the inner display

hinge -d "$UDID" open
sleep 2 # let the layout settle after unfolding
xcrun simctl io "$UDID" screenshot --display=3 inner-1.png

--display=1 is the outer screen and --display=3 the inner one. Check with xcrun simctl io "$UDID" enumerate.

7. Check the files and upload

sips -g pixelWidth -g pixelHeight outer-1.png inner-1.png

Expect exactly 1398 × 2034 for the outer display (portrait) and either 2007 × 2853 or 2853 × 2007 for the unfolded inner display, captured at its native size. Keep each PNG as captured: don't rotate or resize it to force an orientation. Check the actual image for upright, correctly laid-out UI; the dimensions alone don't prove visual quality.

App Store Connect has one iPhone Duo slot per language, with up to 10 screenshots, so you upload one set there. Use the inner display set by default: the unfolded screen is the one that shows your iPhone Duo layout. Upload the outer display set instead if people mostly use your app folded. Either way, the other set is still useful for your website and ads.

What to show

  • Show the app in use. Splash, title art or a login screen alone won't pass (Guideline 2.3.3).
  • The inner display is where your iPad-style or two-column layout belongs. If the app just stretches the phone layout, the screenshot will show it.
  • Captions and frames are allowed, but the screenshots must match the app's real experience (Guideline 2.3). See App Review and iPhone Duo screenshots.

Or upload your build for all required App Store sizes

Duo Screenshots captures the screens you choose from your running simulator build. A Full set covers all required sizes for the devices your app supports. A Duo set is for apps that already have their other required screenshots. We check sizes and empty frames and include a layout report for every size we shoot. We don't add frames or captions or upload to App Store Connect for you.

Inner orientation isn't selectable or guaranteed and may vary between screenshots. We don't rotate or resize PNGs or promise arbitrary dimensions. The two native inner sizes don't add another device group or a second image per screen.

The first language is included in either paid set. Your app must already support the languages you order; we don't translate it. One-time payment in USD, no subscription or trial. Both paid sets arrive within 24 hours from payment on business days (Monday–Friday, New York time); the clock pauses while we wait for information from you.

You don't need an iPhone Duo or a Mac to order and download. You do need a simulator build made on a Mac or macOS CI; a device build or .ipa won't work. See build requirements, including the runtimes for the classic iPhone/iPad and Duo. If App Review rejects your submission because of our screenshots, email hello@weelco.app within 30 days with the rejection message and we refund the order.
